OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR • Variety of class topics reflecting the broad curriculum • P4 and P5 show later in the session • P5 Camp • Trips linked to topics, some local and hopefully one further afield. Into film Festival (November), Bannockburn (January/February) • Visitors to help bring topics to life • Parents consultations – 9/10 October and 5/6 February • Whole school events and themed weeks • Maths Week Scotland 10/9, Anti-bullying week 12/11, Road Safety week 19/11, Internet Safety week, 6/2, Charity Days TBC
Routines • Mr McKeand - Monday, Tuesday, Friday/Mrs Miller – Wednesday, Thursday • Literacy and Numeracy/Maths lessons 5 times a week • PE on Tuesday and Wednesday, Daily Mile • Weekly library session • ERIC sessions in class • New format for earning BAT on Friday
Health and Well-being • Rights Respecting Schools work and class charter • P.E. for 2 hours every week, Daily Mile • Internet safety programme – Focus week, 6/2 • Road safety learning – Focus week, 19/11 • Science and Health and Wellbeing topics relating to being healthy • Eco Schools topic – Health and well-being focus • Anti-bullying – Focus week, 12/11 • Outdoor learning week
Class topics • Health and well-being – Rights respecting schools, Resilience • Science – Healthy Eating and nutrition • Social Subjects – Scottish wars of Independence • Technology – Product design (Dragons Den) • RME – Beliefs and Stories • Literacy – Links to other class topics, Scots, • Numeracy – Time, whole number, number processes • Drama – P4 and P5 show
Literacy • Reading with groups - asking and answering questions about the story. Comprehension of short fictional and non-fictional passages. Literacy Shed. • Class story or novel with work linked to it. The BFG. • Spelling individual and group/paired activities within class every day. Opportunity for extra practice as part of home learning activities. • WritingDevelopment of written work will use Big Writing, with a focus on VCOP • Talking outcomes will be covered through circle times, class presentations, individual and group projects • Listening skills activities, listening skills activities with partner or group during tasks
Maths and Numeracy Numeracy (Mr McKeand) • SEAL maths programme focuses mainly on mental agility and using strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems. • Starting to learn and memorise times tables. • Heinemann Active Maths Programme to reinforce learning • Both programmes use a variety of techniques – oral repetition, using concrete materials, games, songs and written tasks. Maths (Mrs Miller) • Other maths linked to topics where relevant and can be supported through real life examples, e.g. spending money and telling the time.
Home learning • Daily reading, sometimes with reading detective activity • Math activities – Maths wall including Sumdog access • Weekly spelling with activities • Occasional topic related challenges • If individual children have found something particularly challenging we might ask them to work on it at home for extra practice
Assessment • Constant, ongoing assessments of children’s learning • A lot of observations from discussions with children, their written work and from other ways they have displayed their learning • Formative assessment strategies like thumbs up/down, ‘fist to 5’, traffic lights. • We give children immediate verbal feedback and written feedback based on learning intentions for each lesson • Some more formal assessments - at end of units, end of the year.
