The Merit System – Progress and Attainment Years 1 to 6 • 10 merits – bronze certificate • 20 merits – silver certificate • 30 merits – gold certificate • 50 merits – platinum certificate • 70 merits + Principal’s certificates Teachers and teaching assistants to award for good learning behaviours: • Reading homework • Preparation for lessons • Attitude to Work • Contributions in Class • Resilience • Effort
Knowledge Maths English R.E. Thematic curriculum
Maths By the end of year two the children should be able to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10 have rapid recall of 2, 5 and 10 times tables know number bonds to 100 understand place value to 100 use informal methods for addition and subtraction using part, part whole.
English English is taught across the school from year 2 to year 6 using a cycle of reading through to writing:- text – comprehension - vocabulary – grammar – plan – draft – edit/improve – proof read – publish – evaluate They read core texts which ensure progression in challenge and variety in styles
English - spelling/handwriting Spelling is taught with a two pronged attack individual weekly spellings to learn for a written test using look, say, cover, write, check method – a strip a day whole class teaching through RWInc Spelling programme all letters formed correctly/size of ascenders/descenders and joined properly by end of year.
Thematic Curriculum Thematic curriculum is geography, history, art and music It is planned out for a topic per half term (history/geography focus) Year two will cover Coventry, The Great Fire Of London, Explorers and Our Wonderful World – new this academic year
RE During R.E. the children will learn about the following topics Old Testament Stories and Prayers Sharing in the life of Jesus Advent Christmas Parables and Miracles Lent Holy Week Easter Pentecost Special Celebrations Our Church The Mass
Prayers Your child should already know The sign of the cross Our Father Hail Mary We will learn Glory Be Prayer to the Guardian Angel
Educational Visits Fire of London theatre group Baking wow day – baking bread Fire service in school Theatre trip to the pantomime Music morning during spring term Summer term tbc
Timetable The timetable for year looks like this Maths and English daily PE on Thursdays Library on Fridays
Uniform Winter – to be worn from October half term until Easter • Grey skirt/trousers • White shirt and tie • School jumper with logo • Black school shoes (not trainers) • No jewellery apart from plain studs as ear-rings and a watch • No excessive hair accessories • No nail varnish Summer – can be worn after Easter until October half term • Polo shirt with logo • Red and white gingham dress • Black school shoes (not trainers) • No jewellery apart from plain studs as ear-rings and a watch • No excessive hair accessories • No nail varnish
P.E. - Indoor Plain black shorts Plain burgundy t-shirt (or with school logo) Plain black pumps (short socks) Hair must be tied up if below collar length No ear-rings or jewellery
P.E. - Outdoor • Plain black or navy jogging bottoms and top • Old trainers – they will become muddy! • Hair must be tied up if below collar length • No ear-rings or jewellery • All P.E. kits to be labelled and stay in school for half a term • After school kits to be own clothes not uniform
Homework All children from EYFS up to year six should read a little of their school reading book each night (approx 6 – 8 pages) All children from year two to year six will have a set of weekly spellings to learn for a written test (a strip a night and learn meanings). Younger children who are able will have spellings Homework expectations will be stuck inside your child’s homework book Homework out on Mondays and in on Fridays English and maths will be set alternately Reading Eggs/Oxford Owl, Mathletics and Rock Stars are all good ‘extras!’

SATs These will take place during May Please do not book holidays during May Please do not ‘hype’ up SATs – we will tell the children it’s special work for Mrs Williams so that they do their best! Maths – arithmetic paper, reasoning and problem solving paper Reading – two papers SPAG – not a formal test Writing – teacher assessed, can be externally moderated
FSM All children in KS1 are entitled to a free school meal Please inform the office if your child is entitled to a free school meal (whether or not they decide to use it) as the school receives money for each child.
Caterlink School dinners are now provided by a new catering company - Caterlink. All food is cooked from fresh each day. New menus are delicious! After ½ term Caterlink will be taking over the responsibility of managing payments for dinners and also contacting parents for outstanding balances. Therefore, we would appreciate if all dinner money is paid up to ½ term for a smooth transition to the new way of working. Any money already paid in advance will be credited to Caterlink.
