SBN Mike A’Hearn (mostly prepared by L. Kolokolova)
Overview • Misson Status • New Horizons (Jupiter) • Rosetta, EPOXI, Stardust NExT (comets) • Dawn, Hayabusa (asteroids) • Cassini (Saturnian dust) • Future missions • Restoration and DAP • Ground-based and Lab Data • Software tools • Minor Planet Center • Issues PDS MC Mtg
New Horizons • Pluto flyby mission with Jupiter gravity boost • Jupiter Flyby - Jan-April 2007 • 32 datasets from 8 instruments + SPICE, ~100 GB • No data from some instruments with no science at Jupiter • Painful peer review, extensive lien correction (big effort by NH archive team), corrected delivery posted for JDAP (big increase in web hits at SBN) • Fixing minor details for final archive, ver 1.0 • Expect delivery of ver 2.0 (better calibrations) in summer 2008, peer review in fall? • Future events • JDAP Products • Pluto in 2015 PDS MC Mtg
Rosetta • Lander/Orbiter mission to Comet C-G • Ground-rules • ESA-NASA MOU requires full archive in PDS (predates existence of PSA) • ESA Project Scientist does NOT want to change MOU to archive only in PSA • Status • Data from 2 Earth flybys, Mars flyby, remote observations of Deep Impact and C/Machholz • All peer reviewed (PSA still learning to run peer reviews) • US Instruments • ALICE - 12 datasets, 2.3 GB; liens resolved, on-line • MIRO - 7 datasets, 3.1 GB; Reviewing new data from Mars and DI events since PSA reviewer had problems reading data; data may not be compatible with standard tools • IES - 4 datasets, 0.7 GB; lien resolution nearly complete PDS MC Mtg
Rosetta (cont.) • Status (cont.) • Non-US instruments - 10 total • Validation with PDS tools has shown incompatibilities with PSA in many details - most have no effect on scientific usability but problems inhibit ingestion • Some instruments, notably VIRTIS, have data that can only be read with their own software - ok by PSA but not by SBN • SBN negotiating with PSA on incompatibilities and on release schedule • Future Events • Flyby asteroid Steins 6 Sep 2008 • Flyby asteroid Lutetia 10 July 2010 • Acquire P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko May 2014 • End of mission Dec 2015? PDS MC Mtg
EPOXI • Combination of EPOCh (observations of extrasolar planets) and DIXI (flyby of a second comet) with DI flyby spacecraft • Status • Target changed (in Nov 2007) from P/Boethin encounter in Dec 2008 to P/Hartley 2 encounter in Oct 2010 • EPOCH observations currently underway • Various problems in telecom system have interrupted EPOCh observations and may require observations beyond scheduled end in June 2008 • Pipeline upgrade nearly complete to deliver PDS-labelled products • Expected archive after EPOCh • 80 GB raw from cruise + EPOCh • 120 GB calibrated from EPOCh • EPOCh data also delivered to MAST PDS MC Mtg
EPOXI (cont.) • Future Events • Encounter with P/Hartley 2 11 Oct 2010 PDS MC Mtg
Stardust NExT • Flyby of Comet Tempel 1 to study effects of DI and of evolution • Status • DMAP in negotiation between SDC and SBN but close to final signature • S/C conditions nominal • Future Events • Flyby of Tempel 1 14 Feb 2011 PDS MC Mtg
Dawn • Orbiter of Ceres (largest asteroid) and Vesta (highly evolved, large asteroid) • Status • SISs in preparation - disagreements on data delivery, both schedule and format, between SDC and non-US instrument teams • Note policeman issue on last slide • Future Events • Mars flyby 2009 • Vesta orbit 2011 • Ceres orbit 2014 PDS MC Mtg
Hayabusa • Asteroid orbiter/lander and sample return • Ground-rules • Archive responsibility with US science team members • All data to PDS since no Japanese archive in place • Status • Japanese have made imaging data public in non-PDS compliant form • SBN taking over much of the activity expected from US science team (but Paul Abell helping a lot) • Note policeman issue on last slide • Peer review scheduled for June 2008 • Amica • Lidar • Shape Model (Gaskell) PDS MC Mtg
Hayabusa (cont.) • Status (cont) • Data not ready for review • NIRS - lacking pointing information • Radio Science - Yeomans unable to obtain data from team • XRS - no supporting documentation to interpret data; marginal quality, may not be archived • SPICE - kernels on JAXA site; NAIF has no plans to archive • Future Events • Sample return to Australia • Don’t know if they have a sample or not due to s/c cpu problems PDS MC Mtg
Cassini • SBN responsible only for dust instruments • Data being delivered quarterly from HRD and CDA PDS MC Mtg
Future Missions • New Frontiers • From original decadal survey, might expect CSSR • If scope expanded, might expect an NEO sample return • Discovery • Comets and asteroids are the easy targets (after the moon) for Discovery-class missions and offer good science • Expect > 1/2 of future Discovery missions to be comets or asteroids PDS MC Mtg
Restoration and DAP • Deep Impact • Thermal maps to be re-reviewed in June due to large work put into addressing requests of reviewers • Still archiving ground-based data from various sites • Expect several products from DAP this year • Stardust • Reformatting products for use by astronomical community • Calibration of NAVCAM is wrong! • SBN plans to recalibrate (not in scope of PDS, but Stardust project no longer exists) • SOHO • Archiving all cometary data with improved photometric reduction (thesis project funded under Planetary Atmospheres program) • Other • IHW Vega data being restudied at request of Russians • Galileo and Ulysses dust data being worked on PDS MC Mtg
Telescopic and Lab Data • Support data from missions (DI, NExT, DIXI, Dawn) • Ground-based surveys • What to do about PanStarrs??? • Lab spectral data relevant to asteroids and comets • Returned samples • Little progress in negotiating with curation facility at JSC PDS MC Mtg
Software Tools • OLAF (On-Line Archiving Facility) • Used to archive ~80 datasets since 2003 • Most datasets in asteroid/dust subnode are prepared through OLAF • SBN IDL • Now a joint effort with PSA (under CVS managed at SBN) • New data products are a challenge (e.g. VIRTIS cubes) • SBN Cross-ID tool • Requires approx bi-monthly updates • Needs to be ported to new machine and O/S • Ferret • A search tool combining previously independent efforts for comets and asteroids • Much more development needed • Mirror site • Currently developing automatic mirroring (really a backup) on a single site • Will then use UM and PSI to mirror each other PDS MC Mtg
Minor Planet Center • ROSES 2008 calls for proposals to operate MPC, preferably as a part of SBN • SBN originally opposed bringing MPC into SBN because operation is so different • Budget for MPC will come from NEO program according to NEO program exec • Burden on SBN TBD • Don’t know who will win proposal • Will require negotiation on what to archive and how often • What is role of SBN for the many non-archival products? PDS MC Mtg
Big Issues • 6-month delivery period for most missions is very tight for many instruments to calibrate properly • Good-cop bad-cop scenario says PDS should be the good cop and NASA should be the bad cop • Can’t deal properly with DAP products (or even mission products for that matter) unless we know from NASA what has been promised. PDS does not have access to the proposal material PDS MC Mtg
