The Italian National Library Service (SBN) Evolution of a Cooperative Library Service Infrastructure Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Today • An architecture for a cooperative library services network. • Central Union Catalogue (Index) at national level • Union Catalogues (Poli) at regional and local levels • Maintains: bibliografical and holdings information. • Provides services: OPAC, Collective cataloguing, localisation, ILL. Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Today - Statistics • 47 - union catalogues (Poli) participate • 1.558 Libraries • National, University, Local and Specialist • Over 5,5 milion titles • Authors: 1,8 milion. • Localisations: 15 milion. • Public libraries capture over 90%. • 2,400 subjects are captured per day. • OPAC – over 4 milion hits / month Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Evolution: Requirements • 100% compatibility with existing SBN software used by the cooperation. • Integration of existing national databases • Music (printed and Manuscript), Antique and Modern Documents • Extension to new types of material • eDocuments, prints, fotographic material etc.. • Open technological architecture • Allows access from other LMS • Adoption of international standards Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Evolution: Scope • Provision of an open architecture keyed on the following services: • Access by SBN and non SBN LMSs. • Cataloguing support • Localisation (Holdings – support for ILL) • Repository Management • Provision of support for Librarians in their work • Provision of quality control using statistical and monitoring data Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Evolution: Administrative Objectives • Different levels of cooperation • Full adhesion. • Bibliographic record supplier (“off-line”). • Bibliographic capture and localisation. • Bibliographic capture only. • User Profiling • Descriptive detail (from MARC to full SBN). • Level of authority of the descriptions. • Data synchronization requirements. Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Evolution:Functional Objectives • Open access for SBN and NON SBN LMSs • One-step simple catalogue procedure • Using SBN-MARC Protocol – Publicly available API • 100% compatible with UNIMARC • Extends UNIMARC does NOT replace UNIMARC • Minimum description based on UNIMARC requirements • Extension of material types managed • Centered on a common standard cataloguing process. • Improved statistical / quality management services Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN Evolution:Technical Objectives • Open architecture based on common internet protocols: • TCP/IP, HTTP, XML/XSL, SOAP, JMS etc.. • Technological strategy provides easier integration with other systems: • Based on Java Platform 2 Enterprise Edition • High performance and reliability • Unix platforms and Java multi-threaded services • High performance relational DBMSs Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)

SBN Evolution: Project RTI – Consortium: • Finsiel S.p.A. • Akros Informatica s.r.l. The project is divided into 4 parts • Server SBN • Web Interface • Administration, Statistics and Monitor • Migration Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
The SBN Server • Two publicly available protocols: • SBN (existing services) / SBN-MARC (new services). • Extension of material types managed. • Localisation of documents including digital documents and versions. • With or without synchronisation. • Different levels of description. • Multiple import of descriptions (batch). Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
The Web Interface • Existing functions accessed using a Web Interface. • Authority file management. • Authors, subjects, classifications, places, uniform titles, repertories. • Quality control and revision. • Corrections, elimination of duplicates. Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
Administration, Statistics and Monitor • Administrative extension of Web Interface: • Statistics maintenance and display • National and regional • Tools to check and control duplicate records • Performance management and technical support functions Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
Migration • Migration of the existing Union Catalogues (Poli). • Migration of the existing network and connections to the new service • Unification of the national databases: • Modern books and periodicals • Antique books • Music Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
Project Time-Line: Work Completed • Start of Project: 18.10.2001 • Functional Requirements delivered on 15.3.2002: • Protocol SBN • Protocol SBN-MARC • Administration, Statistics and Monitor • Integrated Data Base Design Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
Project Time-Line:Work in Progress • Before September 2002: • UML Analisis of the API and Protocols • Before December 2002: • Source code and executables • Before July 2003: • End of test period • August 2003 • Database migration (final) • September 2003 • Inauguration of the new service Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
SBN The Future • Towards a Service Network for Libraries. Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico (ICCU)
