Biomes in the Zoo The ecosystems and animals that live in them!
Biomes in the Zoo • Aquatic • Desert • Forest • Grassland The Llama
Aquatic Habitat Ecosystem - freshwater wetland habitats, streams connect the ocean to other ecosystems. Water quality depends heavily upon land-based activities. Currents delivering water and nutrients to surrounding ecosystems and aquifers also carry pollutants from human activities. Destruction of freshwater resources could have wide reaching effects for ecosystems and human health.
Aquatic Animals -Water Snake, Otter, Bobcat, Turtles, Fish The Turtle
Desert Ecosystem Ecosystem - Often thought of as barren wastelands, deserts are actually rich ecosystems teeming with biodiversity. Desert plants and animals have developed unique ways to use sporadic, unpredictable rainfall to their advantage. Despite the adaptability of its flora and fauna, this fragile ecosystem can easily be thrown off balance.
Desert Animals - Elf Owl, Collard Lizard, Ocelot, Gila Monster, Desert Tortoise, Road Runner, Vampire Bats, Kangaroo Rats Ocelot
Forest Ecosystem Ecosystem - Tropical Forest - Hot, humid conditions characterize these biologically productive ecosystems. Supporting a large amount of biodiversity, rainforest soil is actually very poor. Most soil nutrients are quickly taken up by plants or washed away with heavy rain. Rainforests are being quickly destroyed by slash and burn agriculture, livestock production, logging, fuelwood collection and other human development.
Forest Animals - Flamingo, Fairy Bluebird, Double-tooth Barbet, Chestnut Teal, Blue-grey Tanager, African pygmy goose, Grey-headed kingfisher, Blue breasted kingfisher, Green Junglefowl, Pied imperial pigeon, Palawan peacock pheasant, Red-faced mousebird, Silver-beaked tanager
Grassland Ecosystem Ecosystem - Grasslands - Characterized by a dry climate, rainy seasons and dependency on natural fire, grasslands are equipped to deal with harsh conditions. Much like North American prairies, these ecosystems cannot stand up to our booming human population. Landscape alterations from intensive agriculture and livestock production cause soil erosion and desertification of grasslands, leading to the loss of unique wildlife.
Grassland Animals - Elephant, Rhino, Impala, Nile lechwe, Gemmsbok, Gazelle The Rhino
