  3. Habitat • Lives in eastern Russia’s coniferous and birch forests • Some found in China & North Korea • Warm summers • Cold winters

  4. Endangered History • Severely affected by the Russian Civil War in 1930’s • Declared endangered in 1959, awarded protection • Endangered species list listed them as endangered in 1970 • Started working on the Siberian Tiger Project in 1992

  5. Endangered Species • Only about 400 living in the wild now & 400 more in captivity • Poaching & Deforestation • Chinese use for medicine • Trophies

  6. Characteristics Boar Fish • Carnivore- Predator • Size- about 9-10 feet • Weight- 300-500lbs • Can eat up to 60lbs but usually 20lb Deer

  7. Cont. • Solitary Animals • Live in dens • Start breeding at 3 years old • Birth once every two years • Litter of 2-6 cubs • Hunt on their own at 18 months • Leave den at 2-3 years • Live about 20 years in captivity, only half of that in the wild.

Conservation Efforts • Try to get people to quit wearing fur coats • Protect of habitat but losses of habitat are still continuing • Stronger logging and hunting laws • Raising public awareness • Siberian Tiger Effort • The WWF- World Wildlife Fund • IFAW- International Fund for Animal Welfare
