Colonization • Explorer James Cook claimed Australia for Great Britain • At the time, 300,000 Aborigines lived in Australia • The British considered Australia uninhabited • The British established a convict colony in Australia • Britain shipped 160,000 convicts to Australia between 1788 and 1868

  8. Colonization • Additionally, British citizens travelled to Australia willingly in search of a better life. • Farmers grew wheat • Ranchers—raised sheep primarily • Miners: Copper then gold • A gold rush in 1851 led to many people moving to Australia and increased the population
