Why did the British colonize Australia? • Relieve overcrowding in Great Britain’s jails • Strategical place for a naval base • Economic base to expand trade • The British didn’t want their rivals, especially the French, to start a colony on the Australian continent
How did the British colonization impact the native people? • Aboriginal people were pushed off their land. • Many Aboriginal people were killed by diseases(small pox). • Many other Aboriginal people died of conflicts with the white settlers.
