  1. CCDs for Adaptive OpticsCfAO Workshop: 22-23 Nov 1999 By P R Jorden Marconi Applied Technologies, Waterhouse Lane, Chelmsford, Essex

  2. Overview of presentation: Company Information [see http://www.marconitech.com/products/ccd/ccdprod.html] CCD design capabilities Science CCDs Low light imaging LL CCDs for AO

  3. CCD44-82 : 4k x 2k buttable sensor & ZIF socket

  4. Mosaic assembly of 3-side buttable large-format 2k x 4k CCDs

  5. Marconi Options for Low Light Level Imaging Slow Scan Camera - Direct CCD Multi-port CCD Camera - Direct CCD Intensified CCD Camera - ICCDs Electron-Bombarded CCD Camera - EBCCDs Solid State Low Light CCD Camera - LLCCDs

  6. Quantum Efficiency - Scientific CCDs

  7. Very Low Noise, Very High-Speed CCDs

  8. Very Low Noise, Very High-Speed CCDs The CCD60- designed for adaptive optics: • 128*128 format image area; frame-transfer architecture • 24*24 um pixels • 1 output • ~16 MHz pixel rate • < 1 e- noise • Wide dynamic range (daylight to starlight) • 400-1000 nm spectral response • Minimal cooling (Peltier?) • CCD60 to be provided with camera electronics • Digital parallel interface, with control features

  9. LL CCD Advantages: • Directly-illuminated CCD; 100% fill factor • Undamaged by over-illumination; good MTBF • High sensitivity, low noise, high dynamic range • Low noise, at high frame rates • Full resolution • Improved cosmetic quality - (no fibre-optics) To be determined: • Characterise Gain stability • Backside thinning • Maximum readout speed • Detailed noise characteristics

  10. LL CCD Development Sequence Status - • Technology demonstrated • Prototype cameras made • Characterisation continuing • 2 device types made so far- CCD60, CCD65

  11. CCD50 Thinned & Frontside versions

  12. CCD50 (16 output) [Standard CCD] & CCD60 (1 output) [LL CCD] Both: 128 x 128 format 24 x 24 um pixels

  13. Peltier package CCD39

  14. Cooled LLCCD: 1 field ICCD: 1 field Cooled LLCCD: 4 field average ICCD: 4 field average Moonlight

  15. Cooled LLCCD: 1 field ICCD 1 field Cooled LLCCD: 4 field average ICCD 4 field average Starlight
