The Messiah’s Call to Worship John 4 God loves the world and He sent Jesus to save sinners The hard part in telling someone about Jesus can be turning the conversation to spiritual matters
Departure from Judea John 4:1-3 Jesus Himself was not baptizing Jesus was on a divine timetable. Jesus would not provoke opposition prematurely
Passing Through Samaria John 4:4-6 Jesus had to go through Samaria The Samaritans were of mixed Jewish and pagan heritage Their religion was a mixture of Judaism and paganism
Passing Through Samaria John 4:4-6 Judean Jews would not travel through Samaria Galilean Jews would go through it It was more difficult and longer for Jesus to go through Samaria
Passing Through Samaria John 4:4-6 Circumstances are not happenstance, but part of Divine providence - God’s sovereignty at work Jesus was weary from His journey He sits down by Jacob’s well near Shechem. It is about noon
Opening the Conversation John 4:7-9 The Samaritan woman is surprised at Jesus’ request for a drink of water “for the Jews do not use together with the Samaritans.” Jesus would have had to drink from her pitcher
Opening the Conversation John 4:7-9 Get people’s attention by reaching out & not acting with religious stereotypes Demonstrate a true interest in others. Be kind to all Ask genuine questions Even ask for help
Inviting Questions John 4:10-12 Jesus’ statement indicates that He is talking about a spiritual subject Living water has a double meaning. A metaphor for spiritual life Water from a stream or spring.
Inviting Questions John 4:10-12 She responded with her own question Try to get people to start thinking for themselves. Make statements, ask questions to prod them beyond the physical here and now
Introducing the Spiritual Truth John 4:13-15 Jesus described the “living water” in terms that were far beyond any physical capacity It is has an internal & eternal source
Introducing the Spiritual Truth John 4:13-15 The woman did not understand. Satan has blinded the eyes of the unbelieving (2 Corinthians 4:4) Until a person knowingly rejects the gospel, you still have opportunity
Creating Thirst John 4:16-20 Jesus He knew the answer to His question before He asked it. Jesus brought her to a point of personal conviction. She was living with a man who was not her husband
Creating Thirst John 4:16-20 Try to get them to recognize their own sin rather than just accuse them. Use Nathan’s example - 2 Sam. 12 She changes the subject from her personal sin to how to properly worship God.
Declaring the Truth John 4:21-24 The issue in worship is not location, but the spirit and attitude of the worshiper Jesus points out her error and corrects her to the truth Jesus pushes on to the more important subject
Declaring the Truth John 4:21-24 Declare the truth, but always in love & always point to the truths of greater importance True worship of God is in spirit and in truth for that reflects His own nature
Declaring the Truth John 4:21-24 Religious rituals and works do not equal true worship of God True worship comes from within the person’s spirit out of a desire to honor and glorify God
Declaring the Truth John 4:21-24 Truth is also essential for worship, Truth is determined by God, not man When man formulates his own methods of worship, he only has religion, not true worship
Declaring the Truth John 4:21-24 True worship obeys God’s commands & approaches God with humility, faith, respect, honor, praise and confession True worship is expressed in a manner of life that is in keeping with truth & glorifies God by its words & actions
Providing Hope John 4:25,26 The woman is ignorant in many ways, but she does long for the coming of Messiah Jesus reveals Himself to her because He is gracious. We must follow His example
Providing Hope John 4:25,26 Jesus humbly opened up a conversation with someone usually treated with contempt by His society Jesus turned the conversation to spiritual matters and created a spiritual thirst
Providing Hope John 4:25,26 Jesus was truthful, but also loving He treated her with grace and revealed the answer to her great hope We are to speak the truth to them in love by giving them a hope they did not know they could have
