Standard 2: Skill and Fitness Based Competence • Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing fitness as delineated in the NASPE K – 12 Standards.
Implemented in Fall 2008 Catalog After 30 hours, all teacher candidates must meet the following requirements: • 1. A “C” or better in PHED 112 and EDUC 110. • 2. Take the PRAXIS I examination. A passing score will not be required on PRAXIS I until the teacher candidate • applies for formal admission into the College of Education. • 3. Achieve and Maintain the healthy zones on all components of health related fitness as measured by Fitnessgram.* • 4. Demonstrate competency in selected invasion and net games as measured by a B- or better in PHED 234.* • 5. Demonstrate the six fundamental movement skills at the proficiency level as measured by the South Carolina Assessment criteria.* • 6. Complete an application for Continuation in the Teacher Certification program. • Before enrolling in EDUC 475 and 490, teacher candidates must: • 1. Achieve a C or better in PHED 348 and 391 • 2. Pass Praxis II (both content and video portion). • In addition to the above requirements, all requirements must be met for initial admission to the Richard W. Riley • College of Education. Teacher candidates must have successfully completed BIOL 307 before admission to Teacher • Education will be granted. • *Accommodations will be made for teacher candidates with documented physical disabilities.

NASPE Standard Element 2.2 • Teacher candidates will: • Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness throughout the program.
Fitnessgram Testing PhasesPhase 1 • Freshmen students evaluated in PHED 112 • Results shared w/ TC & note goes in Advising File w/ specific activity course requirements • Encouraged to begin fitness programs addressing weaknesses • Students passing all parameters are encouraged to maintain or improve their fitness levels. • Initial evaluation of MAT students occurs in PHED 612
Phase 2: Formative Fitnessgram Evaluation and Remediation • Sophomore level students - re-evaluated in PHED 202 Concepts of Fitness & Exercise. • Basic exercise testing & prescription instruction • Devise personal fitness programs • Administer the Fitnessgram to freshmen students in PHED 112. • Informed of & encouraged to take fitness-related classes offered by the Department of Recreational Services.

Phase 3: Summative Fitnessgram Evaluation • Senior students evaluated in PHED 391 Secondary Methods or PHED 348 Elementary Methods • MAT students will be evaluated in PHED 671 Secondary Methods or PHED 670 Elementary Methods
NASPE Standard Element 2.3 • Teacher candidates will: • Demonstrate performance concepts related to skillful movement in a variety of physical activities.
PHED 234 Teaching Invasion and Net Games PHED 621 Skill and Fitness Based Competency • TC gain an understanding of tactics & strategies for effective game play. • Invasion: Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball • Net/Wall: Pickle Ball, Volleyball • Striking/Fielding: Whiffle Ball, Softball • Target: Bowling
