  2. Missions: The Church’s Marching Orders Our Lord Jesus gave the church global “marching orders” which involves each one of us. It is precisely because this mission is world-encompassing that it has local implications. Know this global mission well in order to understand the commission graciously given to Proclamation and my particular role in it.

  4. You Will Receive Power • What is this power? • How is it available for the mission?

  5. Promise • Expectation of the Old Testamant • “I will be your God and you will be my people” • Marriage Covenant • Zechariah 14:9 the LORD will be king over all the earth. • Immanuel → Spirit Empowerment → Cross → Resurrection

  6. Final Fulfillment [Jesus] ordered [his disciples] not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:4-5) [You] were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:14)

Redemption Applied “The Spirit applieth to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling.” (Shorter Catechism) you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) “The whole comes to this, that the Holy Spirit is the bond by which Christ effectually binds us to himself.” (Calvin)

Commissioning • Luke: you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses (also Luke 24:44-49) • John: “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” • Matthew: And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

  9. One Gift – many gifts Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; . . . For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12)

  11. Implications • Missions is Spirit-empowered • “Doing” must be rooted in “Being” • Evidence of the Spirit • Global Unity and Global Diversity
