  2. What are microbes? • Microbes - Any minute, simple, single-celled form of life, especially one that causes disease.

  3. Where do microbes live in our bodies? • Microbes are present in almost every environment, in the soil, the air, even animals and plants. • They are found all over our bodies, on our skin, in our mouth and in our stomach. • Most are harmless, even beneficial. • Microbes that live in our stomach help us to digest our food.

  4. The Benefits of Microorganisms • They help create medicine to fight off sickness. • They are also helpful in the bodies function of protecting the body from bacterial diseases.

  5. Two negative impacts of microorganisms on human health Negative Effects of Microorganisms Can cause food poisoning in a person who eats infected food. They are only one of the causes of infections in the body. Washing your hands and using hand sanitizer kills bacteria. Make sure your food is always cooked and handled safely.

  6. Little critters in our food Bread: Yeast Beer: Yeast Wine: Yeast Cheese: Mold/Bacteria Yogurt: Bacteria Hot Sauce: Bacteria Pickles: Bacteria

  7. With a generation time of twenty minutes, and with no limiting factors, a single bacterium, with a biomass of only l0-12g, would produce 22 x 1025 tons of biomass - 4000 times the mass of our planet - within two days. In other terms, a bacterium could, in a non-restricting environment, produce 1011 times its own biomass of protein alone in a single day. Question: If this is true and microorganisms can be used to produce certain farm crops at this rate, why are there places in the world where people are still dying of starvation?
