  2. *What is Spina Bifida? Spina Bifida is the most common type of permanent birth defect in the United States of America. It is a condition in which there’s a gap in the backbone, caused by the bones of the spine failing to grow together.

  4. Folic Acid Folic acid is a common B vitamin. Scientist indicate that that not enough of folic acid in the pregnant woman's diet, is a key factor in causing spina bifida. Prenatal vitamins that are prescribed for pregnant woman typically contains folic acid, as well as other vitamins they take.

  5. Types of Spina Bifida • Spina Bifida Occulta • Spina Bifida Meningocele • Myelomeningocele

  6. Spina Bufida Occulta Is a group of neutral tube birth defects that can effect the spinal column. This is composed of bones or the vertebrae, which support the nerves center of the spinal cord. This is responsible for carrying all nerve signals in between the brain and the body….

  7. Sign of Spina Bifida Occulta • Hairy patch on the skin • Dark Spots • Dimpling in the back

  8. Spina Bifida Meningocele Occurs when the outer of the vertebrae have not fully completely closed, leaving an opening. The spinal cord coverings are damaged, in which pushed through the opening.

  9. Myelomeningocele Occurs when the outer part of the vertebrae leaves an abnormal opening. Both the coverings of the spinal cord itself is pushed in that opening. Part of the spinal cord bulges into a fluid – filled sac.
