  1. Engineering Department Start up plan for a quick restart after the XMAS BREAK IEFC 19 october 2012

  2. I. Start up plan after the drainage of the PS circuits • Ressources avalaible on week 1 : • 12 persons from the maintenance contract • Staff: 3 persons + possible support from the 3 piquets • 2 persons from the water treatment contract • Thursday January 3rd : • PSB + TT2: FDED-00065 • PSB : F$FSEG-00361 • Friday January 4th : • PS : FDED-00050 Centre anneau • PS : FDED-00032 Amaint PS • Saturday January 5th : • PS : F$FSEG-00355 • POPS • Sunday January6th : • Kept for repairs, leaks ( magnet!!). • Get the nominal conductivity. IEFC 19 October 2012

  3. 2. Aspects linked to the drainage of the primary circuits • When the primary circuit is stopped for more than 24h, it is mandatory to drain it completely. • If the primary circuit is drained, then a mechanical cleaning of the cooling tower is needed. • No way to simplify or shorten the stop and startprocedure (preliminaryshock water treatment, analyse beforedraining and before the restart etc..). → important work in a very short time. • To be able to clean the coolingtowers, CV willneed to stop the circuits shortlyafter the 17th of December. IEFC 19 October 2012

  4. 3. CV costs and environnement CV Costs Running • Manpower for additional rounds (~70 hours) • Electricity(~350MWh) • Normal water and chemicalconsumption Stopped and drained • Manpower for the operation (~500 hours) • Water (~100 m3) • Chemical for the shocktreatment • Chemical to treatafterrefill • Water analyses > ~40 kCHF ~30 kCHF Environnement • Drinkablewater consumption • Release of higheramount of treated water • Chemical for the shocktreatment • Electricityconsumption >< IEFC 19 October 2012

  5. 4. Status of the circuits during XMAS break • If the primary circuit isstopped more than 24h, it’smandatory to drain it down. • If the primary circuit isdrainedthen a mechanicalcleaning of the coolingtowerisneeded. • No way to simplify or shorten the stop and startprocedure (preliminaryshock water treatment, analyse beforedraining and before the restart etc..). • To be able to clean the coolingtowers, CV willneed to stop the circuits shortlyafter the 17th of December. IEFC 19 October 2012

  6. 5. Follow up and start up plan • CV willintensify the rounds during the closureespeciallyif the weatheris cold. • On Monday January 7th, CV will restart : • PS : FDED-00032 PS Magnet • POPS: FTEB-00046 • POPS will be fully operational on Tuesday. IEFC 19 October 2012

  7. 6. February 2012: a good example • Extremely cold and windyweather • All the primary circuits were running with a reducedload. • Large amount of problems on drinkable and fire hydrant circuits but the primary circuits hadwellresisted • POPS start up wasdelayedbecause the filling circuit wasfrozen → corrective workacheived.
