Albert’s Childhood Albert Pujols was born January 16, 1980 in the Dominican Republic. Albert was raised by his grandmother. When Albert was sixteen he moved to the New York City In the US. In 1998 Albert went to Fort Osage High School in Independence Missouri. He played baseball there and had a batting average of 500 his first season. Albert graduated from high school in 1998.
College Albert Pujols attended Maple Woods Community college in Kansas City in 1999. In his only college first season game he hit a grand slam and turned an unassisted triple play. He batted .461 for the year .
The 1st Draft Few major league teams were interested in Albert at first. He first tried out for Tampa Bay Rays. He did not have a good try out. Then the Saint Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 13 round in 1999 for a salary of $60,000. ( Which is not much money for the majors.)
The Major Leagues In 2001 Albert Pujols started his major league career with the Cardinals at third base. During his rookie season he started at four different positions, first base, third base, left field, and right field. In May of 2001 he was named National Rookie Player of the year. ( the first since 1955). In June 2001 he was named Major League All-Star.
From 2003-2004 In 2003 Albert was moved to first base due to an injury to his right elbow. At age twenty three Albert became the youngest batting champion in the major league’s since 1962. In 2004 Albert Pujols signed a 7 year contract for $100,000,000 ( hundred million) with a $16,000,000 club option.
From 2005-2006 In 2005 Albert had some career highs in walks and stolen bases. In 2006 Albert Pujols became the 35th person to hit homeruns in four consecutive bats. In 2006 Pujols won his first World Series with the Cardinals.
From 2007-2008 On August 15, 2007 Albert hit his 25th homerun making him the 5th player to hit 25 home runs in his first seven seasons in the major leagues and the second since Darryl Strawberry. On Aug. 22nd he hit his 30th home run of the season and became the first major player to hit 30 home runs in the fist 7 seasons. On October 13th Albert decided to have surgery on his right elbow. On November 17th Albert won his second Most Valuable Player award.
2009 On May 21 he hit another home run, the ball hit the “Big Mack Land” sign in the left field and knocked out the “I” in the word “Big”. In late August he played his 1000 game at first base. On September 20th 2009, Albert hit his 40th double of the season, making him the second player ever in the major history to hit 40 home runs and 40 doubles in three separate seasons 2003, 2004 & 2009.
Accomplishments Pujols is considered to be one of greatest players in major league baseball. Albert Pujols is currently ranked within the top twenty players. From 2001-2005 Albert hit 201 homeruns. By 2009 he had reached the 350 mark. Albert Pujols and one of his teammates were the only players on the Cardinals to not get 500 strikeouts.
Personal Life Albert Pujols married his wife Deidre on January 1, 2000. They have 3 children, Isabella (which is Deidre’s daughter from another relationship) Albert Jr., and Sophia. Albert and his wife work hard to raise money for people with Down Syndrome. Because Isabella was born with this condition.
Why I chose Albert Pujols I chose Albert Pujols because he is my favorite baseball player. He has Accomplished so many things at his age. He is one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
