  3. History • Began in 1865 in Conover Iowa • W.W. Cargill • Now headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota • Employs over 100,000 people worldwide

Growth • 1950’s Cargill became a large international trader • Developed a presence in grain and oilseed export and many other areas • 1990’s now includes pork, beef, poultry, steel, citrus, and petroleum • Today 5 key segments • Crop and livestock, health and pharmaceuticals, financial and risk management, and industrial

Ethics • Mindset to be a company employees can be proud of • Vision statement • Cargill’s Vision: to be a global leader in nourishing people, their mission: to create a distinctive value, their approach, to be trustworthy, creative, and enterprising, their performance measures: engaged employees, satisfied customers, enriched communities, and profitable growth

Ethics • Cargill uses a set of guiding principles that is expected to be used in their everyday business practices. • 14 compliance policies and should any of these policies be in violation disciplinary action will be taken and may include dismissal • Corporate Citizenship s a very important attribute to Cargill’s business

Rough Times • Not a stranger to the courtroom • 1937 US Govt. brought a case against Cargill for attempting to dominate corn futures on the Chicago Board of Trade • 1963 investigated for “a squeeze” for manipulating the wheat market • 1974 involved in “The Grain Scandal” with the other large grain distribution companies

  8. Conclusion • Cargill has been through many ups and downs but they have come through as once of the premier companies in their industry. And keep ethics as the cornerstone of their business practices.
