Sepoy Rebellion • The unrest helped to start a revolt among the Sepoys (Indian troops who were in the British Army) • The Sepoys grew mad at the British Army because they heard their because they heard their bullets were dipped in cow fat (the cow is sacred to the Indians) • Broke out in 1857 near Delhi • The British won
British Improvements • British improved roads, ports, railroads, and telegraphs • The Indians raised cash crops (tea, pepper, coffee, cotton) • They also improved healthcare, sanitary conditions, and schools
Indian National Congress • Indian nationalism was strongest among the educated elites • Some of them wanted modern ways, while some others wanted tradition • They all demanded independence
Amritsar Massacre • On April 13, 1919 more than 10,000 Indians gathered in the city of Amritsar. • 379 Indians were killed, and 1,100 were wounded • A turning point in the struggle for freedom • Led to more distrust of Britain, which led to more violence
