state • A body of people living in a defined space with the power to make/enforce laws
Sovereignty • Ability to rule absolutely within a territory
Government • Organization inside a state that controls the actions/policies of the state
Autocracy • One person has all the power • Ex.: Monarchy, dictatorship
Monarchy • ruled by a king or queen who usually gains power through family lines
Dictatorship • One person has absolute control over lives of citizens and usually takes power by force. • Also known as tyranny
Democracy • Rule by the people, citizens have political power • 2 types: representative and direct
Oligarchy • Rule by a few; a small group has the power • Can be military, family, religious
Junta • Small group of military officers who rule; much like a dictatorship
Theocracy • Religious leaders usually lead society and religious law is used to settle disputes.
Anarchy • No one is in control
Communism • Single ruling party controls land and production of goods, everyone is equal (classless society) • can be run by a dictator or a small group • Not always practiced in true form
Socialism • Government controls economy & protects the people so they are not taken advantage of by businesses • Small group of people rule
