  2. TV ident: A visual image employed by television programs and channels to give a sense of identity to their profile.

  3. Importance and requirements of TV idents: • TV idents are important as they give a sense of remembrance and familiarity to their image. • They make channels and programs stand out. • Some idents help reinforce the values of the channel. • Required as all channels and programs need an identity/image.

  4. Key terminology: • DOGS – Digital On Screen Graphics. • Lower/upper third graphics – Information in the lower/upper third of the screen such as information bars (names). • Bumper – Sponsorship/ident reinforces/short adverts. • Rule of thirds – Three sections on screen to help position objects in relation to where a viewer will be looking.

  5. BBC1 Upper third graphics. Rule of thirds. (The main text for the ident is positioned in the center as it is the main area in which a viewer will be focusing on).

  6. E4 The choices of colours and design have a very bold visual effect. The ident is very bold and uses an unconventional purple colour. It meets the requirements of the channel as it is a ‘trendy’ and ‘cool’ design which will appeal to younger audiences.

  7. BBC1 BBC1’s ident/s all reinforce formal and educational values. The ident for BBC One is easily remembered as it is always in the shape of a ‘O’ for ‘One’. It reinforces the structure and importance of the BBC.

  8. Idents • Design – How does the design reflect upon the channel? Does it stand out? Does it reinforce the channels values in any way? • Purpose – What is the purpose of the ident? What is the reaction desired from seeing this ident? What does it represent? • Opportunities – How will this ident work successfully?Is there an expected reaction? Is it appealing and will it stand out?

  9. Cbeebies • Design – Basic and childish design, bright colours with a yellow character. • Purpose – This ident is designed like this so it will appeal to very young children. It is a friendly and welcoming design. • Opportunities – It is a unique design that people will remember. It differs from other idents.

ITV ident/advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KEKdPKytPU This TV ident for ITV in my opinion is an unsuccessful ident as it lacks creativity and is unimaginative compared to some other idents. If the logo was not shown half way through the clip it is unlikely that you would be able to identify the channel. The purpose of successful idents are to create unique and imaginative identities which stand out.
