Preparing for Note Cards • Ask a research question: Does a pilgrim’s estate influence his or her devotion? • Draft a thesis: On the journey to Canterbury, a mixture of estates expresses a mixture of morals. • Develop an outline: Introduction, Knight, Wife of Bath, Pardoner, and Conclusion • Find a source: Elements of Literature (90) • Cite the source: Reference analysis • Practice Parenthetical References

  4. Practicing Note Cards… Title • Title: Short, descriptive, and unique phrase. • EXAMPLE: The Knight’s Values • The more notecards you have, the more specific the titles should be. • EXAMPLE: Knight’s Christianity • EXAMPLE: Knight’s Chivalry

Practicing Note Cards… Quote • Direct Quotation: Exact copy of words from a sourcebetween 1 and 3 sentences. • Include a parenthetical reference in the “Direct Quotation” text box of every note card. • EXAMPLE: Just home from service, he joined our ranks/ to do his pilgrimage and render thanks. • (Chaucer 79-80)

  6. Practicing Note Cards…Paraphrase • Paraphrase: Restate quote in your own words after thinking through (all) the information. • EXAMPLE: The knight returned home from fighting in the crusades. He joined the pilgrimage, so he could honor God. He also wanted to thank God for his survival. • This will become part of your final paragraphs.

  7. Practicing Note Cards… My Ideas • My Ideas: Thoughts or feelings about the information including questions or paragraph labels. • EXAMPLE: The knight was dedicated to both chivalry and Christianity. He fought for his beliefs. • This will become part of the final paragraphs.

  8. Putting it all together… The knight represents an ideal member of the feudal estate. He is a devote Christian. For example, the knight is “Just home from service, he joined our ranks/ to do his pilgrimage and render thanks” (Chaucer 79-80). The knight’s service is a crusade or holy war. He is traveling to Canterbury to thank and honor God. While the knight is an example of a perfect pilgrim, his fellow traveler, the Wife of Bath, is not.
