8. Learnings - 2009 Price points in 2009 was high because of the following reasons
Trade was having good season in 2008
Lower production in 2009
Trade opened higher prices in season for Shimla apple to allure growers more than their expectations
The trend continues till November
The sales of Stored apple starts with Kinnaur Apple in December
The Kinnaur Apple stored @Rs1500-1800 per box but Fuji was available @Rs1200-1300 per box in December.
The trade/growers lost heavily which led to distress sale
Storage Capacity of Apple in Delhi 50 L boxes ( 90% Kashmir Apple)
In 2009 insignificant volume of Shimla Apple, All time high Kinnaur Apple, and 37L boxes of Kashmir Apple stored in Delhi
Telengana Issue boiled the initial selling period for more than 40days leading to loss of selling window.
Panick Sales triggered low price realization
9. Opportunities in 2010 Good Crop in Kashmir Valley 2times than 2009
Quality of the crop is better because of adequate rain, chilling hours , snowfall and low haling (5-10%) in all growing belts
Higher Crop will lead to rise in freight cost by Rs15-20/box (expected freight -Rs65-70/box) upto Delhi and Packing material cost by Rs20/box.
This saving of Rs35-40/box will be done through crate purchase during the season in comparison to previous year.
Freight at the time of liquidation will be dropped to Rs15-20/box leading to a saving of Rs50/box
Heavy haling and better crop in HP coupled with a poor performance in 2009, the opening price of HP apple is expected to be low.
Lower prices of HP Apple, Good Crop in Kashmir and poor results of stored apple by the growers of Kashmir will result in lower purchase prices of Kashmir apple in 2010.
The prices of Kashmir Apple is expected to be lower by Rs10-12 per Kg
