  3. Initial Research Results By the time most students enter a postsecondary institution, many have chosen a career path. Especially if it is nontraditional in nature.

  4. Goals • Determine who is enrolled in a non traditional career for their gender (age, background, ethnicity • Program of Study/Career Choice • Who influenced career choice • When did influence occur • Barriers to Success in Non-Traditional Career

  5. Most Important Goals • Largest contributing factor that helped students persist in the field of study • Largest contributing factor that may have deterred students from completing or furthering education in program

  6. Findings • Completed a CTE program in high school • 25% yes • 75% no Where were you before your first semester at this institution • 31% high school • 6% two year school • 41% working full time • 22% other

Findings cont’d • 70% indicated that this was their first career choice • They were influenced by a teacher 25% of the time and parents, relatives, and friends 75% • 48% indicated that some kind of high school activity influenced their career choice • 67% indicated that there was no outside of school influence • 65% said that nothing they did during school helped • 27% said some kind of classroom experience helped
