A Better education Daniel Defoe and an academy for women
Read pages 578-581 in the textbook. • Why does Defoe believe that the education of women is an important issue? • According to Defoe, what are the benefits of having a society filled with educated women? • Describe the sorts of things Defoe would teach females in his “Academy for Women.” • According to Defoe, what are the personal and societal costs of not educating women.
Now it’s your turn… • Break into groups of four. • Create a list of six essential things every American high school graduate should know. • For each of the six things you have listed, name four real-life areas where you could apply this knowledge/skill. Due Wed in class! • For example: Basic addition & subtraction = making/receiving correct change at the store.
A new American academy • Based on your group’s ideas about education, create a profile of your “New American Academy.” • Create a logo/coat of arms you will use to promote your Academy. This visual should communicate your school’s vision for its students. • In your visual, be sure to communicate what your students will know when they graduate from your school, as well as the curriculum /activities/programs your Academy will use to teach those skills. • Craft a motto that embodies your school’s vision. For example, Higley’s motto is “Connect, Engage, Inspire.” • For fun, pick a mascot that represents your school. Write up a short explanation stating why this mascot best represents your school.
This project will be worth a total of 75 pts • There will be 3 components (25 pts each): • Written list of 6 things students will learn at your school as well as 4 real world applications of their knowledge per each of the 6. • Visual poster/Coat of Arms that displays your school’s curriculum/activites etc… • In-class group presentation • Presentations will begin on Thursday
