Wheelchair Tennis By, Lena Treadway • What kinds of clientele does • wheelchair tennis benefit? • Amputees, cerebral palsy, rheumatoid arthritis, • spina bifida, spinal cord injuries (most prevalent) and stroke http://en.chinagate.cn/features/Paralympics/2008-09/15/content_16459413.htm • What is Wheelchair Tennis? • It was founded in 1976 when Brad Parks hit a ball from a wheelchair and realized the potential of this new sport. • It is played the exact same way as tennis • The person in the wheel chair is allowed two bounces if needed. • Benefits of Wheelchair Tennis. • Wheelchair tennis can be rehabilitative, recreational, and competitive • Recreational benefits are physical, mental, social, psychological and wellness • Players can go on to compete competitively in the Paralympics Teaching Wheelchair Tennis -Understanding basic rules of wheelchair tennis, and disabilities of those who want to play wheelchair tennis. -This is all one needs to know in order to teach this sport Efficacy Research -A study had two groups of people in wheelchairs. One group actively played wheelchair tennis and the other group did not. -The results determined that the wheelchair individuals that participated in wheelchair tennis were more positive in mood. They were also higher on self-efficacy for tennis and wheelchair tasks compared to nonparticipants. Scoring of Wheelchair Tennis No point- “Love” First point- “15” Second point- “30” Third point- “40” Fourth point- “Game” - The games are played best out of 3 or best out of 5
