Community Building: Why Take the Time? • Connectedness and Adolescent Development • Healthy emotional/social development key to building positive identity • I am important • I matter • I have a Voice • I belong • School shootings & “Fringe” Social Groups • SDA schools are no longer exempt! • Teaching positive Communication Skills & Relationship-building must be an intentional part of the curriculum
CPR: Circle of Power & Respect • WHO? • Teacher, students, any other adult in room • Teacher led at beginning of school year • Can be student led after students become familiar with the routines
CPR: Circle of Power & Respect • WHAT? • In a circle….everyone can see everyone • 4 Consistent Structures: • Greeting • Sharing • Activity • Daily News
CPR: Greeting • By name • Structured to ensure that every child is greeted • Often includes handshakes, high fives, clapping, singing, different languages • Eye contact is a must! • Use a “just right” voice • Use PWR Loop to model and process
CPR: Sharing • Students share news of interest OR topic selected by teacher • “Listeners” respond in a positive manner, articulating thoughts, feelings and questions • Not done everyday or take turns with a couple of students each day • Student choice… Can use the“I pass” option • Involves sophisticated, complex communication skills and, therefore, should be the last component to teach
CPR: Group Activity • Whole class does a short activity which builds cohesion through active participation • Can be related to academics for the day OR just done for fun! • Plan & model…Use PWR Loop
CPR: Daily News • Daily message written by the teacher… is read and discussed by students • Creates sense of anticipation about the day’s activities….informative • Builds sense of community • Academic skills are practiced • Can be interactive
CPR: Circle of Power & Respect • WHEN? • Whole group meets in a circle to begin the day • 20-30 minutes • Consider having a “wrap up” Closing Meeting at the end of the day to reflect on the day and get feedback from students for the purpose of making each day better. Ask: • What went well today? • What can we do better?
CPR: Circle of Power & Respect • WHERE? • Children gather in a circle formation so that everyone is visible to everyone else • Consistent place within the classroom • Strive for the ideal, but if needed, just make it work!
