What is Narrative Writing?. Narrative Writing. In narrative writing, a writer tells a story about something that actually happened, might have happened, or might happen in the future. The events in narrative stories can be real(personal narrative) or made up (fantasy).

Narrative Writing • In narrative writing, a writer tells a story about something that actually happened, might have happened, or might happen in the future. • The events in narrative stories can be real(personal narrative) or made up (fantasy).
What is included in narrative stories? • Beginning- start with an opening that will get attention, introduce the setting and characters, • Middle- the problem or action is developed and the characters are trying to resolve the conflict • Climax- the turning point of the narrative • End- the conclusion to the activity or solution to the problem is revealed
An Effective Narrative Composition… • Tells a personal or imaginative story • May include the writers imagination and personal experiences that are related to the story • Contains narrative elements such as characters, plot, point of view, setting, conflict, and events • Contains narrative strategies such as, flashback, foreshadowing, dialogue, tension, and/or suspense • Is multi-paragraph • Presents a story that has a well developed beginning, middle, and end • Uses a lively writing voice to engage the reader • Uses vivid sensory details and concrete language • Uses a variety of sentences • Contains correct sentences, usage, grammar, and spelling that make the writer’s ideas understandable
Examples of Narrative Prompts • Your school is being featured on a local TV talk show. You have been invited to appear on the show and talk about something interesting that happened at school. Write about what you will say on the TV program. • Think of funny things that have happened to you. Which one would make your friends laugh? Write a story you would tell so that your friends will know what happened and why it was so funny. • What do you remember about being in the first grade? Think about your first grade memories. Choose one and write about it. • Your class has planted a garden at your school. One morning you notice that all the plants have mysteriously disappeared. Write a story telling what happened to the plants.
