What is an Ice Core? • Cylinder of ice removed from an ice sheet. • Layers of snow become compacted into ice, which are laid atop previous layers of ice to create records of the past. • Like rings of trees in temperate parts of the world, ice layers in polar regions and glaciers also create layered historical records.
