THE FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAMBY PATRICK LENCIONI CO-WORKERS WITH GOD 2 CORINTHIANS 6:1-10 NOW IS THE ACCEPTED TIME NOW IS THE DAYOF SALVATION NOW SEEK GOD’S HELP!
WHAT IS A TEAM! • A team is a small number of people with complementary skills, who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves accountable (Katzenbach and Smith, The Wisdom of Teams, p. 112). • I am a dreamer. Some men see things as they are, and ask why; I dream of things that never were, and ask why not? (George Bernard Shaw).
THE VALUE/NEEDS OF TEAMWORK • COMMON GOALS PHIL. 3:14; ACTS 2:44 • LEADERSHIP 1 COR. 3:6-9 • INTERACTION/INVOLVEMENT JOHN 9:4 • SLEF-ESTEEM ACTS 20:32 • COMMUNICATION EXODUS 14:15 • POWER TO MAKE DECSIONS EXODUS 18:21 • MUTUAL TRUST 1 TIMOTHY 6:20 • RESPECT FOR DIFFERENCES AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION ACTS 15:36-41
1. ABSENCE OF TRUST: INVULNERABILITY • Invulnerability= Incapable of being wounded, hurt, damaged, or one who is immune to attack, hold grudges, jump to conclusions, pointing the finger at others. • What is my single greatest weakness? -Mistakes? -Concealed? • What is my single greatest strength? 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 Psalm 133:1
2. FEAR OF CONFLICT: ARTIFICAL HARMONY • We must engage in Open, Constructive, Ideological conflict – agree and disagree ,yet be friends (JOHN 15:13-15). • Harmony is the result of working through issues and cycling through conflict-speak opinions and honest concerns. • Argue effectively about an issue and walk away with no collateral damage/loss. • Everyone enters the debate!
3. LACK OF COMMITMENT: AMBIGUITY • Fail To Commit: doubtfulness, uncertainty in meaning or intentions, vagueness, creates fear in direction and priorities, lack of confidence, fears failure, revisits decisions, and encourages second-guessing among team members. • A Team That Commits: change direction without hesitation; committing to a plan with everyone buying into it before the meeting ends. • People allowed to share opinions and are listened to, will commit (JAMES 1:19)!
4. AVOIDANCE OF ACCOUNTABILITY: LOW STANDARDS • Avoidance: Creating resentment among the team members who have different standards of performance; encourages mediocrity; misses deadlines and deliverances. • Accountable: The team holds a high standard of performance; peer accountability ( improving) is the result of everyone clearly buying into the same plan, otherwise, we say, “I never really agreed to that anyway.” The team know exactly what it needs to achieve! 2 Corinthians 5:10
5. INATTENTION TO RESULTS: STATUS QUO AND EGO • Not Focus on Results: Team members put their individual needs (ego, career development, or recognition) or even the needs of their divisions above the collective goals of the team. EGO=Easing God Out! It is all about “ME!” The church stagnates/fails to grow! • Focused on Results: Achievement-oriented members; members who subjugate their won goals/interests for the good of the team. • Results: SOULS! Matthew 13:38
6. LACK OF COMMUNICATION: CONFUSION • Failure: It is all about ME !Silence, manipulation, no direction, no knowledge of what one another needs or is doing, a political/power driven team/church. Politics is when people choose their words and actions based on how they want others to react rather than based on what they really think (88). • Success: Talk about US and WE! Commercialize all plans, visions, and goals: Bulletin/Boards, Letters, Pulpit, and Phone.
TEAM LEADERS • Facilitator • Skilled at helping teams solve problems • Models what is expected • Listen well • Understands how to coach, motivate, and inspire • Know how to get people to FOCUS • Good Communicator • Understands Change • No longer an Expert or Dictator!
MISSION • GO! MATTHEW 28:19 2. SOW THE SEED LUKE 8:11 3. MAKE DISCIPLES MATTHEW 28:19 • BAPTIZE BELIEVERS MARK 16:16 • TEACH THE SAVED MATTHEW 28:20 • PLANT CHURCHES 1 COR. 3:6-9 7. PRAY FOR A GOOD HARVEST MATTHEW 9:35-38
A GOOD TRAINING PATTERN • LUKE 6:46; JAMES 1:21-25 • I DO, YOU WATCH • I DO, YOU ASSIST • YOU DO, I WATCH • YOU DO, I ASSIST • YOU DO IT ALONE!
FOCUS “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ.” Patrick Henry
