Jubail International School (Boys Section) Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Jubail International School in Saudi Arabia collaborates with students worldwide to learn about marine pollution and its impact on marine life and human beings. Through research and awareness-raising activities, the students aim to understand the root causes of marine pollution, its effects, and develop solutions to eradicate this global issue.

  1. Jubail International School (Boys Section) Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Marine Pollution Global Issues : Environment Learning Circle 1 (Middle/High School) Facilitator: Mr. Habib ur Rahman Asad Students Participated: Grade 7 Group Name: Global Issues: Environment (GEV1)

  2. Jubail International School Kingdom of Saudi Arabia iEARN Projects- Global Issues: Environment Jubail International School (JIS) is located in the Eastern Province of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. JIS joined iEARN in January 2016 and collaborated with students of different schools from USA, Moldova and Pakistan. We are proud to have Grade 7 teams, from both Boys’ and Girls’ Sections, representing JIS in iEARN forum for Global Issues: Environment Learning Circle 1. Grade 7 (girls) were collaborating on a project “Weather changes around us “. The goal of this project was to highlight the climate change around us and show how it effects on our routine and habits. Another goal was to show how to develop different ways of adapting within our surroundings, in order to maintain a healthy life style. Whereas Grade 7 (boys) were collaborating on a project “Causes of Marine Pollution and its effects on Marine life and human beings”. The goals of this project were to understand the factors which lead to Marine Pollution hence affecting sea food, to understand how far poor drainage and industrial waste adversely affect sea water and also drinking water for local population, and what effects do we observe when we have deforestation for building roads and industries. Our students and teachers both enjoyed working on these projects. Mrs. Alyaa Al-Hakeem facilitator of Girls section said, “it was an awe-inspiring experience being part of this community and seeing students endeavor to present their views and interpretation. We all cherished our collaboration together and we are genuinely enthusiastic about exhibiting our final projects”. Mr. Habib ur Rahman Asad facilitator of Boys section said, “it was really a nice experience to work in collaboration with other learning partners. This has provided a great opportunity to the students to think beyond boundaries and explore new aspects of world around them”. We the Jubail International School are thankful to Participant Schools, Dr. Barry, Mr. Mark Cullen and the iEARN for giving us this great opportunity to be part of such a great learning and exposure. We would wish to join more project in the coming year. Regards, Mrs. Mehreen Qasim- Head of Girls Section Mr. Muhammad Zakariya Babur- Head of Boys Section Mr. Ismail Alaqra- School Head

  3. Marine Pollution

  4. GOALS OF THE PROJECT To discuss the root causes which lead to the Marine Pollution. • To understand the impacts of Marine Pollution on Marine Life and human Beings. • To take necessary steps to eradicate this problem.

  5. Sea pollution is any rubbish that ends up in the water that affects anything that lives there. Sewage from domestic households, factoriesand commercial buildings sewage that is treatedin water treatment plants is often disposed intothe sea. How does it happen?

  6. How does it happen? • Oil pollution caused by oil spills fromtankers and oil from ship travel. Oil does notdissolve in water and forms a thick sludge. • Burning fossil fuels into the air causes theformation of acidic particles in the atmosphere. When these particles mix with water vapor, theresult is acid rain. • Industries including power and desalination plants and refineries, recreation and tourism, waste water treatment facilities, power plants, coastal mining and quarrying activities, oil bunkering and habitat modification such as the filling and conversion of wetlands.

  7. What type of rubbish gets into the oceans ? • The waste we flush down the toilet is a big problem. • This is called sewage. • Chemical Waste drained out into sea . • Spilling of oil. • Soil Erosion near the coast.

  8. Encourage people to look at the Environment Agency website and follow their advice. Email: enquiries@environment agency.gov.uk www.environment-agency.gov.uk How to raise awareness? Post information online to make people more aware of pollution. Encourage people to reuse and recycle instead of throwing things away. Make posters to raise awareness. Persuade people to volunteer to pick up rubbish found on beaches.

  9. The Pollution of the Ocean & waterways • Ocean pollution is caused by human and natural causes, which include oil spills, toxic waste and floating plastic. • Pollution affects marine life by poisoning the fish through toxic chemicals, this is then spread through the marine food chain. Trash in the ocean can make marine life as well as human life ill because it could carry diseases such as cholera and dysentery. • Rubbish from the city can spread into nearby waterways through sewage. Sometimes it gets there by litterbugs. i.e. people who throw litter onto the ground for no reason, some even throw it directly into the waterway (i.e. Canal) for no real reason. An item dropped in the street can drift into the gutter, fall down the grid and enter the sewage system that travels out into the sea.

  10. The most harmful item in the Saudi Arabia that has contributed to pollution within water is Spilling of oil. It can cause serious damage to marine life in the sea and hence destruction of fishing industry can leave thousands unemployed in Asian Countries. The other factors are the following: Different items take different lengths of time to degrade in water: Cardboard – Takes 2 weeks to degrade. Newspaper – Takes 6 weeks to degrade. Photodegradable packaging – Takes 6 weeks to degrade. Foam – Takes 50 years to degrade. Styrofoam –  Takes 80 years to degrade. Aluminum –  Takes 200 years to degrade. Plastic packaging – Takes 400 years to degrade. Glass – It takes so long to degrade that we don’t know the exact time.
