Accepted Wisdom • Decision Makers are important and busy people. • Decision makers should not be undermined by OA. • It’s not what you say, it’s the way that you say it. • Timeliness is of the essence. • OA provides advice.
Discussion Points • Accuracy is important but precision is not. • Analysts find their comfort zones and often choose to interact with planning staffs. • Conveyors of bad news will (eventually) be thanked. • Operational Decision Makers are easier to advise than peacetime bureaucrats. • Decision Making is an art and should be recognised as such. • Advice should stimulate thought. • Advice should be tailored to the Decision Maker.
Syndicate Topics • 1Is it good enough to interact only with the Decision Maker's planning staff? • 2How should OA be presented to the Decision Maker? (Consider uncertainty) • 3Should (and can) the analyst work “with” or “for” the Decision maker? • 4Do we need to interact differently for military vs civilian and senior vs junior Decision Makers? • Please consider both Operational Commanders and peacetime Decision Makers.
