  2. A Zaibatsu Economy • Zaibatsu: a large financial and industrial corporation • Zaibatsu controlled major sectors of the Japanese economy in the 1920s &1930s

  3. Problems w/ Japanese Economy • Economic inequalities due to concentration of wealth by Zaibatsu • Poor wages • Low quality housing

  4. Problems w/ Japanese Economy (cont.) • Inflation of food prices = food riots • Rapid increase in population led to food shortages

  5. Effects of Great Depression • Call to return to Trad. Japanese values • Blamed industrialization and modernization for economic problems

  6. Effects of Great Depression (cont.) • Many Japanese denounced attempts to find security through cooperation w/ the Western imperial powers • Demands for Japan to use own strength to dominate Asia and meet own needs

  7. Japan & The West • Japan needed natural resources & markets to sell goods to keep economy growing • Result: Japan practiced Imperialism & seized territory (Taiwan, Korea, Part of Manchuria) • Due to aggressive action, tensions rose w/ Western countries (especially USA)

  8. The Rise of Militarism • Change in Japanese Politics • Early 1900s Japan had moved to a more democratic gov’t • Late 1920s: militant groups became ruling party in Japan

  9. The Rise of Militarism (cont.) • Some civilian: convinced that W. ideas had corrupted the gov’t • Some military: upset over cuts to military spending & pacifism by gov’t

  10. Japanese Militarism • Military invades & conquers Manchuria (1931) • Gov’t protests, but people support it • Result: Military voted into power by Japanese people

  11. The New Totalitarian Japan • Military gov’t supported by Emperor Hirohito (viewed as god) • draft implemented • Economic resources placed under gov’t control

  12. The New Totalitarian Japan (cont.) • All political parties combined into 1 • Labor unions abolished • Western teachings prohibited in Japanese schools (only Trad. Japanese values & practices)
