Standard 11.5.2 • Analyze the international and domestic events, interests, and philosophies that prompted attacks on civil liberties, including the Palmer Raids, Marcus Garvey's "back-to-Africa" movement, the Ku Klux Klan, and immigration quotas and the responses of organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Anti-Defamation League to those attacks.
Activity: Responses to Attack on Civil Liberties • You will be reading about organizations that were formed in the 1920’s to fight attacks on civil liberties and discrimination. • Each student in your group will teach the other group members about a specific organization while they take notes.
Activity: Fighting Discrimination • Directions: • Get out two pieces of paper • Watch Ms. Lee fold a sample • Label your paper as shown: • Front: “Fighting Discrimination” (top) • Back: • 1st flap:American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) • 2nd flap:National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) • 3rd flap:Anti-Defamation League (ADL) • 4th flap: Marcus Garvey’s “back to Africa” Movement
Activity: Fighting Discrimination • Read about your assigned organization and fill out the corresponding flap with the following: • Who (who was the founder) • When (When was it founded?) • Why (Why did they organize? What type of discrimination did they fight?) • How (How did they try to fight discrimination)

The American Civil Liberties Union(ACLU) • Who: Roger Baldwin- founder When: 1920 • What: An organization that fought to stop discrimination against immigrants. Still exists today. • How: litigation (lawsuits) & lobbying (influencing decisions made by the government) • Why: to defend immigrants and other “undesirables” in court to ensure constitutional rights and protect civil liberties.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) • Who: W.E.B. Du Bois – founder • What: A group that fought for the rights of African Americans, and tried to end discrimination practices during the 1920s, such as segregation. • How: Fights legal battles to end discrimination and racism • Why: People of all races, nationalities and faiths united on one premise --that all men and women are created equal.
The Anti-Defamation LeagueADL • Defamationan abusive attack on a person's character or good name • Who: Order of B'nai B'rith • What: A group that fought for the rights of Jewish people. • How: fights anti-semetism, defends democratic ideals and fights for civil rights with policy makers the media and the public. • Why: in response to rampant anti-Semitism and discrimination against Jews. To end discrimination in hiring, schooling and housing.
Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) • Who: Marcus Garvey • What: A movement that wanted black people to band together and move back to Africa. Believed in the worth of the African Americans, and thought that the best way to encourage self confidence was to simply leave the United States. • How: • sought to empower blacks worldwide toward economic, religious, psychological, and cultural independence. • Promoted “Back to Africa” separatist movement • Why: discrimination against African Americans
