Function • Skin, hair, and nails protect underlying tissues – also regulates body temp.
Structure • Epidermis, top layer of skin that keeps the outside from the inner tissues • Dermis, lower layer of skin that keeps temperature of the body average. • Hair, any of the cylindrical keratinized pigmented filament characteristically growing from the epidemic. • Nails, made of protein called kertain a form of modified hair. • Sweat glands, to excrete perspiration through the pores in the skin.
Relationships • Skin covers the muscles to protect it. • Brain, tells skin temperature through nerves that tell you its too hot.
Diseases • Acne, An inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the skin that is marked by the eruption of pimples or pustules, mostly on the face. • Eczema, a non-contagious inflammation of the skin, characterized cheifly by redness, itching, and outbreaks. • Dandruff, a scaly flaky shed from the scalp, sometimes caused by seborrhea. • Skin cancer, a change on the skin a sore that wont go away. The sun is the main cause as well as ultraviolet lights.
Interesting facts • The skin is the humans body’s largest organ. • The word Integument comes from a Latin word meaning covers. • Sweat is made up of salt, water, and other compounds. • If the ducts of oil glands become clogged with excessive amounts of sebum, dead cells, and bacteria, acne can result. • Important function is to protect. • If pressure increases on the skin it increases the chances of mitosis and a thicker epidermis it forms and creates a callus.
