Assistive technology is any item, tool, or device that can assist a student with a disability in accessing the general education curriculum in school. Assistive technology devices can be as simple as a pencil grip or as complex as a voice generating computer.
TECH ACT PUBLIC LAW 100-407, the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 (Tech Act) was designed to enhance the availability and quality of assistive technology (AT) devices and services to all individuals and their families throughout the United States.
IDEA 2004 The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA ’04) defines an assistive technology device as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child.
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY SERVICE IDEA ’04 defines an assistive technology service as “any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.”
Assistive Technology Supports & Services Assistive technology supports and services that are specified in the federal definition of assistive technology services include: • Evaluating the student’s need for a device • Buying, leasing, or acquiring the device • Selecting, fitting, adapting, repairing, or replacing the device as needed • Coordinating the services for a student who uses a device (e.g., therapies, education) • Providing training or technical assistance to the student, family, teachers, or others involved in the use of the device
IEP Team Consideration IDEA ’04 requires IEP teams to consider whether AT devices and services are needed to accomplish the individualized goals and objectives for students with disabilities. Though teams are required to consider AT, unfortunately there is no federally designated process for them to follow.
Assistive Technology for theSeeing Impaired Visually impaired students can learn to use their residual vision more efficiently by training with APH's Light Box. Materials are used with it to promote basic visual skills, eye-hand coordination and simple matching tasks. LIGHT BOX
Assistive Technology for the Hearing Impaired. Hearing Aid The Hearing Aid magnifies sound. This assists an individual with limited hearing to hear much better.
Assistive Technology for theLearning Disabled GOTALK 9+ The GOTALK 9+ allows a child with a learning disability to play a prerecorded message by simply pushing a button. This allows the child to make a selection and/or to indicate a desire or request.
Assistive Technology for thePhysically Disabled IntelliKeys Adaptive keyboards become the paper and pencil for children with physical disabilities. It provides them a method to communicate their mastery of a concept.
