While it might be true, it is not enough to say “The audience is women” or “The audience is anyone reading US magazine.” You need to move past a one-dimensional answer and begin to develop an audience profile. With a specific piece of writing in mind, it will help to dealwith the concept of audience in the following dimensions:
1. Who ARE these people? Do you see clues about age, class, gender, education, or political position? 2. Attitudes: What typical attitudes does the audience have towards the topic?
3. Values: What beliefs and values are involved? 4. Background: What in their background or daily experiences helps explain their point of view?
5. Knowledge Base: Does the audience appear to know a lot about the topic? 6. Misinformation: How might they be uninformed or misinformed about the topic, and how does the author/speaker address that?
7. Personal Interest: How would the audience like to see the problem, question, or issue resolved,
8. Differences: Does the author/speaker acknowledge what separates him or her from the audience? Is there a difference of assumptions, values, interpretations, or consequences? How does the author/speaker try to resolve these differences?
9. Commonalities: Does the author/speaker try to identify with the audience? Does he or she point to a shared local or national identity? A common cause? A shared experience? A well known event or cultural trend?
Form groups of four.Decide upon a short process(4 to 10 steps)that you want to describe to others.Determine your audience.Write the process in a manner so that the audience can carry out the process. As a group, write the process description.
