  1. PO 407Flight Operations 407.02 Aerodrome Operations (non-ACGP)

  2. Outline • Structure of a SAC club • Daily routine and operations at a club • Standard signals • Methods of launch • Aerotowing • Landing procedures • Emergency procedures

  3. Structure of a SAC Club • President • Secretary • Treasurer • CFI • Everyone helps out! • http://www.sac.ca/

  4. Daily Routine and OPS • Typically have a morning briefing • Planned events for the day • Weather • Any additional concerns • Other briefings, such as for contests are more involved • http://www.sailplaneracing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=3 • Likely a fairly long wait for your turn to fly • Club is run by volunteers

  5. Standard Signals • Launch signals same as ACGP • Some international clubs may differ • Major difference is lack of formality and higher individual emphasis on safety and look out • Some clubs will have a “Grid Master” or “Line Chief” to move the operation along • Similar to the LCO or Field Commander • Grid or cue refers to the lineup of gliders waiting to launch

  6. Launch Methods • Typically air tow • Some winch launch and rarely auto tow • Self launchers • http://www.bggc.co.uk/images/gliders/falke.jpg • Some overseas may use bungee launch

  7. Aerotowing • Pilot is paying for the tow so they choose where to go • Usually a club will have a tow pattern but it is not set in stone • Glider pilot may request by radio or by signal where they want to go • All other signals are the same

  8. Turn Signals

  9. Procedures for Landing with Many Gliders in the Area • Normal circuit procedures apply • Lower glider has priority • Each club will have its own policies on landing areas • Typically the pilot’s responsibility to clear the glider from the landing area • Some clubs will taxi after touching down • Best to get a briefing/dual trip

  10. Differences in Emergency Procedures • Every site will have local differences and specific sites better suited for alternate landing areas • For the most part, the altitudes we use for decisions can apply to other gliders • TC preference – plan for off field below 300’ • In civilian gliding there are those who have landed out and those that will! It is common and acceptable.
