Ryoji Ikeda Tania Lopez AD 100: Intro to Responsive Art
Ryoji Ikeda: Bio • Born in Gifu, Japan in 1966. • Currently lives and does his work in Paris, France. • His work centers upon visual as well as sound media especially the human’s ability to hear different ranges in sound. • His work has been performed and exhibited worldwide ranging from festivals to small DJ clubs. • His latest project is called “Superposition (2012)” and is currently a mystery as of today (hasn’t been posted yet to his personal website.) • His works are long term projects. For example, one project can be the beginning of a series of similar ones.
Db • Meaning of title: The letters ‘D’ and ‘B’ each stand for a word that represents the antonym of the other. ( dark/bright, deaf/blind, death/birth, do/be.) • The project focuses on using white noise and plays with high as well as low frequencies. • Ikeda used the black and white room in this composition to represent the contrast between one another. The sounds and visuals that travel and are displayed, respectively, within the room are used in order to create a greater contrast showing that a simple looking composition contains various intricate parts. • https://vimeo.com/37665455
Series of works • DB • Matrix • Spectra • Time and Space • V≠L • Systematics • Datamatics • Test Pattern • Superposition (TBA)
Datamatics Project Datamatics Datamatics.tron • This second composition is part of the Datamatics series. • Every single pixel in datamatics.tron was created using mathematical calculations and data. • Visitors are able to walk amongst the composition and become surrounded by the projections displayed on the floor and against the wall. • By using pure data, Ikeda created sounds and an abstract visual composition. • The composition is meant to play with sound and the human ear ability to perceive it. • 2D and 3D images are projected that create an exciting visual creates depth. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnai_KrK4Ko
Test Pattern Project • Ikeda used any data ranging from photos, text, sounds, etc. and turned them into binary numbers which created a pattern (of zero’s and one’s.) Thus creating a barcode-like pattern. • In “Test Pattern n’2” he used sounds to create patterns of barcodes again but this time it was projected onto two screens (one on the floor and one on the wall.) • It combined both audio and visual aspects like most of his other works. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omDK2Cm2mwo&feature=related
Spectra • Spectra is a much more interactive piece that does require audience participation. • By using very powerful rays of light and projecting them vertically in the sky, the area becomes illuminated. When people walk among the bases of the ray of light, the sinewaves that are being signaled collide with one another causing a wave of sound that is heard by each person. Together, the sounds create a song out of the sinewaves. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdK-TfbWLlo
Reoccurring themes • Ryoji Ikeda enjoys working with lights, sound, and creating codes using math that create dazzling visuals. • His work typically focuses on contrast (black and white, white noise and white sound.) • Sounds that are played in his compositions enhance the experience of seeing the visuals. It adds more depth and creates a theme using time and space. (The timing of the sounds and the space being used.) • He always works on long term projects. He continuously adds improvements or explores different techniques once he’s created a new project. • He relates his works to a human’s ability to perceive information through sight and hearing.
