What we aregoing to learn today? “The Trail Of Tears” You will need to take notes so paper and pencil ready Today’s lesson will be on “The Trail of Tears” which will tie into “Jacksonianism”, The Fifth Amendment, Native American rights and YOUR rights You’ll end the lesson with a HAP with the prompt, “Does the government have the right to take someone’s land even if they don’t want to sell it?”. HINT: be sure to use the ideas of power and authority in your answer

Part of The Fifth Amendment Says • “No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law; nor shall property be taken for public use without just compensation” • This established the idea of Eminent Domain which allows the government to BUY property if it’s in the path of a highway or important government project • Your FIRST writing prompt, after 90 of shoulder talk “What does this mean to YOU”? 10 minutes to write Be sure to demonstrate an understanding of the ideas of “power and authority”

So, what happened to The Native Americans • Even though there were treaties, agreements, fair compensation and all sorts of mean ugly things, Andrew Jackson ordered the removal of ALL Native Americans to be moved to west of The Mississippi River • Read pages 394-396 and take notes: What are the most important ideas, words, gist of the passage?

HAP: “What would YOU do if you were Native American; would you stay or would you leave?” OR, “What would you do if the government was forcing you to give up your property” • In your notes: what are the important words or ideas in the reading? • Who has the power and who has the authority to carry out the removal of Native Americans?
