Sustainable Environment Forum 2016 Ayumi Fujino UNIDO Representative for India and Regional Director for South Asia
Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID) • Contribute to SDG 9: • Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure • By • Creating shared prosperity • Advancing economic competitiveness • Safeguarding the environment
Supporting Sustainable Industries in India • In 2015, India’s manufacturing growth by 4.6% because of improvements in investment conditions and growing demand vs 2.8% globally • India became the 6th among Top 10 World Leading Manufacturers in 2015 • REF. International Yearbook of Industrial Statistics2016 (UNIDO) • Prerequisites for industry to flourish in a sustainable manner: • the availability of an assured supply of affordable and clean energy, together with improved resource efficiency; • the availability of matching skill profile and requirements for sustainable industries; • Transfer of best practices and knowledge management from in and outside of India. • Working with the Government of India Initiatives: Make in India, 100 Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat, Skill India, Start-up India
Meeting the Climate Challenge • Industries and institutions - both public and private — need to be able to assess and understand climate change, design and implement adequate policies and work towards resource efficient societies and low emission growth. • “Decoupling” natural resource use and environmental impacts from economic growth; • Greening industries and creating green industries; • Supporting policy dialogues and strategies for establishing national road maps for greening the supply chain; • Developing benchmarks and indicators; • Introducing clean technologies and facilitating innovation; • Improving industrial energy efficiency by contributing to the transformation of markets for energy-efficient products and services; • Promoting sustainable energy solutions for making industries more productive and climate resilient, e.g., optimum use of renewable energy for industrial applications; • Devising viable financial scheme(s) for interventions for technology and innovation in partnership
UNIDO Interventions in India Supporting Environment concern: * Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production – Eco-labelling, green building* Environmentally sound management and final disposal of PCB’s in industrial establishment * Environmentally sound management of medical waste in India* Development and promotion of Non-POPs alternatives to DDTPromoting New and Renewable Energy:* Business models for increasing penetration and scaling up of solar energy* Organic waste streams for industrial renewable energy application in India* Ultra-low-head micro hydropower technology for productive activities in rural areas
Encouraging Innovation:* Clean technology and energy efficiency for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) Working for Energy Efficiency:* Promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy in MSME clusters* Promoting market transformation for energy efficiency in MSMEs Handling new challenges with New Initiatives:* National Air Quality Index * Sustainable Cities (Waste Management) * Food Safety : Standardization and Certification * International Solar Alliance
