Goal - What students will learn: • Main Idea: • The geography of early Nubia helped civilization develop there. • Kush and Egypt traded, but they also fought. • Later Kush became a trading power with a unique culture. • Both internal and external factors led to the decline of Kush. • The Big Idea: • The kingdom of Kush, which arose south of Egypt in a land called Nubia, developed in advanced civilization with a large trading network. • Standards: • 6.W.1.2. Students are able to explain the development of the River Valley civilizations based on their geographic locations. • 6.W.2.2. Students are able to identify the cultural contributions of the River Valley Civilizations. • 6.C.1.2. Students are able to identify relationships of events, ideals, and written documents to changes in civilizations.

Access Prior Knowledge • Preview Main Ideas and Big Ideas • Review Vocabulary • Vocabulary activity was done on first day of unit • PowerPoint with Vocabulary words and students write answers on marker boards • Points are kept for each row for the chapter and the row with the most correct answers gets a prize • Discuss “If YOU were there…” • Rulers chart • Students figure out the challenges and accomplishments for Queen Hatshepsut and Ramses the Great • Discuss with rows and find an answer • Share with class and fill in on Smart Board

New Information • Read pg. 102-106 and discuss questions • Students Answer Focus Questions as we read (smart board) • Complete Section 4 Graphic Organizer from pg. 102(smart board) • King Tut unmasked pictures • After viewing pictures have a silent discussion • Questions about exploring tombs are written on posters • Students are put in groups and have to write their responses without talking to each other • Put around room and students walk around and can add to each others • On smart board have a vote of whether they should do it and why • Living in Ancient Egypt Video (20 min) • Google Earth – Abu Simbel

  5. Application • Worksheet 56 & pg. 106 #3 • Write Name in Hieroglyphics • “Was King Tut Murdered?” Activity • Do Days 1-4 of activity

  6. Generalize • Discuss Focus Questions and answer on smart board • Complete Graphic Organizer and reveal on smart board
