  1. Welcome to Mr. Kaufman’s (Mr. K) Classroom for 2012/2013 Back To School Night This year is going to be fantastic and I get to teach 7th and 8th grade Social Studies 7th Grade is World History “The Medieval World and Beyond” 8th Grade is US History “The United States Through Industrialization What a GREAT time to be taking Social Studies. We are in an Election Year

  2. How To Get Hold Of Me (This will be in your handouts) • Andrew_kaufman@dpsk12.org • 720.423.9760 • http://Drewkaufman.wikispace.com (No “www”) • We will post everything you and your students need to know about our class will be. We’ll take a look at the wiki in a few minutes • My planning periods will vary from day to day but I reply to ALL emails within 24 hours (usually sooner) • I also coach Girl’s Softball and Boy’s Baseball

  3. Why are we teaching Social Studies? “A constitutional democracy is in serious trouble if its citizenry does not have a certain degree of education and civic virtue.” Phillip E. Johnson “Question Authority” Unknown What a GREAT time to be in Middle School

  4. How this year will work? • This year will be all about student growth, achievement and exploration of how societies and the world works • We will be focusing on BIG IDEAS and Essential Questions and will be using technology (I will be learning technology from the students) • I can’t wait to see the first round of blogging • We will foster a collaborative work environment. The structure of our classroom will require students to be working with, and learning from each other. – You can expect me to treat your students with a positive and supportive approach -- Expected behavior will be modeled behavior. • The entire staff at Hill is here for your child’s academic and social needs and to support them in any way possible • Please be sure students are prepared for class each day with paper, pencils and notebooks • We highly encourage parental involvement in as many different ways as there are parents • Students and parents are expected to be familiar will school policies on electronics, dress code and behavior.

  5. Homework Policy • Homework, class assignments and projects are vital to students demonstrating mastery of the content and concepts. • When an assignment is meaningful, students want to do it. • It is my goal to have all work carry meaning • Homework will never be given as punishment • Homework will allow students their own exploration of material, concepts and content • Homework is due when it is due. Late work will be at the rate of 1 grade point per day. • I encourage electronic homework to save paper

  6. Grading Policy • I will always ask students what evidence they think I would require to prove they had met the standard. • Students will be involved in the genesis of a rubric. “I DESERVE “X” and here’s “why” • The consequence for not doing the work is DOING THE WORK. • Tests will never be a surprise. The goals for each unit will be well communicated at the beginning and reviewed regularly. I post study guides before ANY test or quiz • Regular parental discussion is encouraged as it relates to grades, both positive and negative. Parents should never be surprised by a grade • Despite all efforts, some students will fail to master or demonstrate mastery of the material but that should not be a surprise. All my policies and procedures will be posted on my wiki site

  7. Questions and Answers? The most important contributor to student growth and development will be the partnership between parents, students and educators.
