  1. Process Matrix Jeffrey Wix Dr. Thomas Liebich

  2. The Process Matrix • The process matrix aims to be a simple, easy to understand presentation of processes that take place in construction and facilities management that identifies: • the activities occurring in a project that share information with other activities, • the ‘roles’ taken by the participants (actors) in the project, • the sender(s) and receiver(s) of information within an activity, • the form in which the information is sent from an activity. • The process matrix is presented as a table in which the principal row and column headings are activity and role.

  3. Components of the process matrix • Roles • are defined by function (what is done), not by discipline (who does it) e.g. • project management rather than project manager, • structural design rather than structural engineer • Activities • describe the fulfilment of particular requirements not the actions undergone to achieve it, • are organised by major project phases as defined in the GPP, • Pre-project | • Pre-construction | further detailed into 10 phases • Construction | with intermediate phase reviews • Post completion | • have information sharing requirements, • have one or more roles that send information (marked ‘o’), • have one or more roles that receive information (marked ‘x’), • share particular sets of information for a purpose. • represent the information in a typical way

  4. Role ----> |-------------| V Activity V o x Complex activities may be divided into sub-activities Overview of the process matrix Example: Outline feasibility phase Notes w.r.t. data content, data format and communication form Phase 2 communication
