  1. OBSERVATIONAL SURVEY OF MOTORCYCLISTS 2010 Chanyoung Lee, Ph.D., PTP Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) University of South Florida Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition Meeting November 2010
  2. OUTLINE Observed Helmet Use Motorcycle Registration and Crash Trends in Florida Effect of the New Training Law Motorcycle Citations Opinions from Dealerships on the New Training Law Event Survey Results from Biketoberfest2010
  3. OBSERVATIONAL SURVEY OF MOTORCYCLISTS 2010 - Sampling by County
  4. Helmet use (including DOT-compliant and novelty helmets) in Florida was observed at 55.3 percent, a slight increase compared to 2002 survey Novelty helmet use declined (1998 >> 2002 >> 2010)
  5. The percentage of observed motorcycle types in Florida remains unchanged between the two surveys The use of helmet is highly associated with motorcycle type
  6. There is no major difference in the use of personal protective gear by Florida riders between surveys
  7. From 1991 to 2008, the number of motorcycle registrations in Florida increased nearly 3.5 times
  8. Florida’s motorcycle crashes show a sharp annual increase in many statistics Percent of Motorcycle Crashes to All Vehicle Crashes by Year Percent of Motorcycle Fatalities to All Vehicle Crash Fatalities by Year Percent of Motorcycle Fatalities to All Motorcycle Crashes by Year
  9. Motorcycle injuries in Florida increased by 84.3 percent compared to a 60 percent increase in U.S. motorcycle injuries between 2001 and 2009 Motorcycle Rider Crash Trends in Florida by Year
  10. Until 2007, the appearance of unendorsed motorcycle riders in crash data remained stable as 32 % which reduced to 29.3 % in 2008 and 25.3 % in 2009
  11. Motorcycle fatalities in Florida showed significant reductions in before / after new mandatory training law analysis (15 months after and 18 months before) Further data collection and analysis will be required to see if the reduction of fatal crashes is directly related to the new training law as current database contains crashes by those riders for whom Florida mandatory training law has not been applied. It is also noted that the total number of crashes and injuries before and after the law does not show a significant difference. Motorcycle Fatal Crashes by Month Before/After Mandatory Training Law
  12. Citations for riding at an unlawful speed and issuance of warnings were the most common citations issued to Florida motorcyclists
  13. Since the implementation of the mandatory training law, the total numbers of motorcycle-related citations have continued to show reduction
  14. Opinions from Dealerships on the New Training Law About two-thirds of the dealerships (67 percent) support the 2008 mandatory training for motorcycle endorsement, especially the small dealerships. More than half (56 percent) of the dealerships were interested in obtaining more information on ways to partner with Florida’s Motorcycle Safety Coalition. Motorcycle dealerships’ active involvement in promoting rider education and safety presents a great opportunity to positively affect motorcycle safety in Florida.
