  2. The Persians Fight Greece • City-states rebelled against Persian rule. • Persians put down the revolt, however, Darius was still angry. • Darius swore revenge on the Greeks.

  3. The Battle of Marathon • First battle of the Persian Wars. • Darius invaded Greece by sailing to Marathon near Athens. • Athens had 11,000 soldiers • Persians had 15,000 soldiers • Greeks won because of better weapons and leadership.

  4. The Legend of Marathon A messenger ran from Marathon to Athens - 26 miles, to bring the news of victory. After crying out “rejoice!” he fell over dead.

  5. The Second Invasion • Darius’s son Xerxes I attacked Greece • In defense - the Spartans - who had the strongest army in Greece fought the Persian army.

  6. The Battle at Thermopylae • Spartans sent 1,400 soldiers, but the Persians attacked from behind. • Spartans fought to their death. • Persians swept through Athens attacking - then burning the city.

  7. The Battle at Salamis • Greeks regained their momentum. • They attacked and defeated the Persian navy, • The Athenians sunk Persian ships. Those ships that were not sunk, retreated.

  8. Persians at Plataea • An army of Greek soldiers beat the Persians at Plataea. • Ended the Persian Wars • The Persians left Greece.

  9. Defeat • Although humiliating for the Persians, they remained strong. • For the Greeks, they saved their homeland.
