Subject-Verb Agreement • A subject must agree with a verb in number • Singular subjects must have a singular verb • Singular verbs in present tense / base form ALWAYS end in an (s). Ex. • The dogjumps on me when I walk through the door. • Codyhates doing homework every night. • A girlis coming over to clean tonight. • That moviecreeps me out. EXCEPTION: I is singular, but its verb NEVER ends in “s”. I always say what I am thinking.
A Plural subject takes a Plural verb. A plural verb NEVER ends in an (s). Ex. 1. Weare expected at the party at 8:00 p.m. 2. Those guyswalk to school every morning. 3. The employershave heard about the accounting error. 4. They always go to the restaurant on Friday night.
Agreement with Prepositional Phrases A Prepositional Phrase can come between the subject and verb in a sentence. DO NOT make the verb agree with the noun in the prepositional phrase. *Sometimes a prepositional phrase can begin the sentence, and the subject will be after the verb. Ask yourself, “what is this sentence talking about?” Ex. • The boys (in my math class) are extremely smart. • The collection (of rare coins) was expensive. • Those countries (on my social studies map) are all under communism. Subject-Verb Agreement with Inverted Sentences • Subjects sometimes follow a verb and can even occur at the end of the sentence. • Ask, “Who or what is actually doing or being? • Phrases at the beginning of sentences Ex. Behind the door was a prize. • Questions Ex. DoesRosego to camp? Do her sistersgo to camp? • Sentences beginning with there or here (these aren’t the subjects) Ex. Here comes a parade. There goes a float.
Homework: • Use each word correctly in a CORRECT, ORIGINAL sentence. • Underline each subject in the sentence with 1 line. • Underline the verb in the sentence with 2 lines. • Highlight or circle the vocabulary word in each sentence.
