  1. How to conjugate Latin verbs Present tense 1st and 2nd conjugations (“regular” verbs)

  2. Verbs • Regular infinitive verbs end in “re.” • Infinitive is the “to do” form of a verb with no time or place attached. • To make any other forms, you drop the “re” to create a stem. • To make all other forms you will be “adding” to that stem.

  3. Command (imperative) • Once you have removed the “re”, you have created the stem. • The stem is actually the singular imperative or command. • To create the plural command, you add “te.” You will see many examples of this in English (such as investigate = you (all) find!).

  4. 1st Conjugation • An example would be “portare” = to carry. • The “are” identifies it as 1st conjugation. • Drop the “re” to make the stem • porta is not only the stem but also the singular command “carry!” • portate is the plural command “(all of you) carry!”

  5. 1st Conjugation present tense • The present tense endings are o, s, t, mus, tis, and nt. • You can remember these using the rhyme (mnemonic) Yost must isnt

  6. 1st Conjugation present tense • 1st conjugation has one exception to the rule in present tense…when adding the endings to the stem, “a – o doesn’t flow.” • In Latin we pronounce every letter, unless two letters together make a new sound like the æ or œ. • Because of this, the stem will be “porta” for all of the forms except the “I” form where the ending will be “O.”

  7. 1st Conjugation present tense • port* + o = I carry/I am carrying • porta + s = you carry/are carrying • porta + t = he, she, it carries/is carrying • porta + mus = we carry/are carrying • porta + tis = you (plural) carry/are carrying • porta + nt = they carry/are carrying

  8. 2nd Conjugation • An example would be “videre” = to see. • The “ere” identifies it as 2nd conjugation. • Drop the “re” to make the stem. • vide is not only the stem but also the singular command “see!” • videte is the plural command “(all of you) see!” • No spelling or pronunciaition issues.

  9. 2nd Conjugation • vide + o = I carry/I am carrying • vide + s = you carry/are carrying • vide + t = he, she, it carries/is carrying • vide + mus = we carry/are carrying • vide + tis = you (plural) carry/are carrying • vide + nt = they carry/are carrying
