Trinity Doctrine of God
Analogies • Bible never uses analogies to teach on the Trinity. • 4 leaf clover, tree, and water do not work • Farmer, mayor and elder does not work • Remember God is unchanging in who He is
Modalism • This claim is that one person appears in 3 different forms • Father in OT, Jesus in NT and Spirit at Pentecost • Called this because it is said God reveals Himself in different modes • John 10:30-I and the father are one and John 14:9-He who has seen me has seen the Father is taken out of context
Modalism • The fall is that this denies the personal relationship within the Trinity found in scripture • Denies 3 separate persons at the baptism • Jesus praying to the Father is a charade • The atonement is lost in this as well because God can’t send His son
Arianism • Arius was a pastor in Alexandria and his views were condemned at Nicea in 325 • Jesus was created by God the Father-Jesus did not exist before time • Jesus is greater than all other creation but not equal to God • “Only Begotten”-John 1:14, 3:16,18, 1 John 4:9 • Colossians 1:15-First born of all creation
Nicene Creed • We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen. • We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.
Arianism • Greek difference is one letter • Homoousios-of the same nature • Homoiousios-of similar nature
Subordinationism • Son was eternal and divine but not equal to the Father in attributes. He was inferior or “subordinate” • Origen advocated that the Son derived his being from the Father • He was attempting to protect the distinction of the persons of the Trinity
Adoptionism • Jesus lived as an ordinary man until his baptism and then God “adopted” him and then he had supernatural powers • Jesus did not exist before his was born as man • He was not divine in nature even after his adoption
Why the concerns? • The atonement was at stake • Justification by faith alone was at stake-Can Jesus save us if not fully God? • If Jesus is not infinite, should we pray to Him? • Salvation would be from a creature if Jesus was created • Independence of God and interpersonal relationships
Economy of Trinity • Different functions • God the Father spoke creation inti being and the son carried them out and all things were created through him and for him. Holy Spirit was hovering above the waters sustaining God’s presence in creation. • God planned redemption; the son obeyed the father; the Holy Spirit gives us new spiritual life.
