What is SedimentaryRock? • Sedimentary rock is formed at or near the Earth's surface by the settling and accumulation of rocks, minerals, or the remains of plants and animals.
Clastic sedimentary rock • Clastic sedimentary rock is formed by accumulation of rock fragments and minerals
Biologic sedimentary rock • Biologic sedimentary rock is formed from plant and/or animal remains.
Chemical sedimentary rock • Chemical sedimentary rock is formed when minerals precipitate out of the water.
What is the process of lithification? • Lithification is the process of converting loose sediment into a rock. lithificationhappens when compaction and cementation work together over time to cause the process known as lithification.
What is compaction • when sediment accumulates over time it becomes very heavy and exerts increasing pressure upon the lower layers. Over time this process can squeeze the pieces of rock tightly together. This is called compaction.
What is cementation • When compaction is happening water can seep down around the sediment granules and soak into the sediment layers. Mineral crystals can be formed around the grains, fusing the sediment pieces together. This is called cementation.
How are sedimentary rocks formed through dissolving and recrystallization? • Chemical sedimentary rocks are made of mineral crystals that are formed from chemicals dissolved in water. The dissolved minerals re-crystallize and form sedimentary rocks through evaporation or precipitation.
