What is Sedimentary Rock • Sedimentary is derived from the Latin word “sedimentum” which means to settle. • They form from the remains of plants, animals, and other rocks and minerals • These can range in size from being microscopic like clay to boulders • Sedimentary rocks are divided into three different groups which are clastic, biologic, and chemical. • Clastic: Rocks that form from minerals and other rocks • Chemical: Form from minerals in water during precipitation when minerals regroup from the solution. • Biologic: Form from once living plants and animals
More About Sedimentary Rocks… • Examining rocks can play an important role to our understanding of an area’s history. It can also tell us what the changes it has been through. (Sedimentary rocks are easy to find because of their layered structure) • The physical appearance of the layer structure can reveal what environment was the rock formed in.
How do they form? • They form by lithification • -Lithification: the process by which loose rock forms into solid rock by compaction, cementation & crystallization • Compaction-the process that occurs when overlaying materials compress down on rock. • Cementation- a process by which where dissolved minerals fill in open pore spaces sediment granules & re-crystallize • Clastic and Biologic rocks are when various rock materials are squeezed together tightly over a period of time
How do they form by dissolving & re-crystallizing • Chemical sedimentary rocks are created when chemicals are dissolved in water. They re-crystallize through precipitation or evaporation after they are dissolved. • An example is travertine which is formed in geothermal caves and springs. This rock is used for floor tiles.
